Q;
What is the deal with every other cover having a WAY high fill hole and the Crane covers do not...?
A:
Engineering...
Overfilling a diff is not the solution to concerns about pinion bearing oiling.
Too much oil in a diff leads to early seal failures, leaking from vent hoses and a waste of oil.
If you are going to tip your pinion WAY up, have your axle and gear fellow install a pinion bearing baffle...this holds oil onto the outer pinion bearings and at the same time does not create leaks associated with overfilling the axle. TJ,CJ and YJ owners...
Most common 4 to 6" lifts never require tipping the pinion up enough to ever need a baffle installed or the need to overfill the axle. Crane covers fill holes are just right.
All high pinion front axles have a baffle and slinger (the slinger is a flat disc that gets pressed on between the inner pinion bearing and the pinion gear.) from the factory..in-experienced gear installers often leave these out.. That can cause pinion bearing failure. We know this because we install them everyday at Crane World HQ in Commerce City Colorado. Crane is a full service axle and gear shop with 34 years combine experience.
